I'm an Account Planning Director. I've been in the biz for 11 years, working at Thompson Murray, Campbell-Ewald and most recently, WestWayne. I often say that I don't necessariliy love our business but I love what I do. It's that feeling that drove me to think about marketing and advertising in a different way. To frame it up with social psychology and interpersonal communication instead of the selling process. You can be proud of what you do if you are adding to the lives of people in some way.
This simple quote captures my perspective on marketing...
“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” - Dale Carnegie
I'm not quite sure what I am, but I do know that of all the industries I've worked in through the past decade (oil, telecom, defense, intelligence), marketing is the most ripe for change and innovation. That's because I believe marketing isn't just marketing anymore...it's about building relationships with people, not selling consumers.
I love to find new and different ways to build these friendships, expanding the definition of marketing to things like employee development and product design. The company today that approaches every aspect of their business as part of their marketing, I think, is the company that'll end up on top.
